STEAM

At Xenia Community Schools, we are committed to ensuring our students are not just ready for the future — they are leading it! In alignment with Destination 2030: Every Student, Future Ready, our new XCS strategic plan, we are thrilled to announce a new multi-year initiative to transform Cox Elementary into an Ohio Designated STEAM School.
Over the next several years, Cox Elementary will transition into a hub of innovation, incorporating Project Based Learning into every classroom. This will position the school well to apply for official state designation by Spring 2028, while continuing to provide our students with a world-class educational experience.
TIMELINE
2025–2026: Explore
Our team is finalizing the roadmap and beginning staff professional development.
2026–2027: Implement
We will begin bringing STEAM practices and initial Project Based Learning (PBL) units into every classroom, including Specials and Special Education. Because a hallmark of a true STEAM school is community partnership, we will be working closely with local businesses, higher education institutions, and arts organizations to bring real-world experiences directly to our classrooms.
2027–2028: Apply for Ohio Designated STEAM School Status
We will roll out additional Project Based Learning units, and officially apply for Ohio STEAM Designation when applications open in the spring.
Together, we are building a bright, innovative future for every student at Cox Elementary.
-
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. It is more than just a curriculum; it is a way of thinking. By integrating these subjects, we teach our students how to be critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and collaborative teammates.
-
An Ohio Designated STEAM School is a school that has been officially recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, as well as the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN). It means the school meets rigorous standards for integrated learning, community partnerships, and preparing students for the future.
-
Cox Elementary is the perfect home for this initiative. By focusing on STEAM, we are addressing the high community demand for specialized learning while investing in the long-term growth and health of Cox Elementary. This ensures Cox remains a vibrant, competitive, and innovative place to learn.
-
At Xenia Community Schools, we are committed to developing the key skills defined in our Portrait of a Graduate. A STEAM-centered approach is an incredibly effective way to bring these traits to life. Instead of just hearing about these concepts, students practice them daily.
- Critical Thinking & Perseverance: Students don’t just find the "right" answer; they test theories, embrace trial and error, and work through challenges until they find a solution.
- Collaboration & Communication: By working in teams on real-world problems, students learn how to share ideas, listen to others, and lead effectively.
- Responsibility & Empathy: By connecting lessons to the community, students see that their work has a purpose beyond the classroom. Whether designing an accessible playground or a tool for a neighbor, they learn to ask: "What does this person need, and how can I help?" This builds compassion and a deep connection to Xenia.
-
Of course! STEAM is not a replacement for traditional subjects; it is a way to teach them more effectively. For example, a student might read a book about local history (Language Arts/Social Studies) and then design a 3D model of a historical landmark (Engineering/Arts/Math) as a project to reinforce learning.
-
Unlike a traditional project done at the end of a chapter, PBL is how the chapter is taught. Students take on leadership roles to solve a challenge, often ending with an exhibition where they present their findings to real-world experts.
PBL puts the student at the center of learning. They gain knowledge and skills by actively engaging in meaningful, hands-on projects that create deeper understanding.
-
As of Spring 2026, we are in our "Learning Phase," and staff are making plans to implement PBL in our classrooms. Families will see the first official Project Based Learning units roll out in the 2026–2027 school year, with two units per grade level.
-
No! If you are a current Cox family or live within the Cox boundary, your child is automatically part of this journey with us.
Families who do not reside in the area for Cox may choose to “open enroll” to the school during the Spring Open Enrollment period. For the 2026-27 school year, intra-district open enrollment is April 7 - May 29, 2026.
-
STEAM thrives on partnerships! We are actively seeking involvement from local industries, higher education, and arts organizations. If you work in a field related to STEAM and would like to mentor or partner with us, we want to hear from you.
